The foursome had the drive of a lifetime along with over 100 other competitors taking in London, Brussels in Belgium, Munich in Germany and Rom in Italy in five days.

Rob Garofall, 33, of Weston Avenue, Leighton Buzzard and co-driver and next-door neighbour 32-year-old Mark Foster drove a Ferrari Spider F355 - while in a Porsche GT3 Mark II was 55-year-old car dealer Dave Fensome of Comp Gate, Eaton Bray, and 39-year-old design consultant Kev Jarman of Sundon Park, Luton.

Speaking on his return Mr Fensome said: "It was brilliant and everybody got back safely. The best bits were meeting a load of other petrolheads and driving such a fast car - a really safe fast car - along all the roads which made up the route through Germany, Italy and back through France.

"The camaraderie was great. We met some really good guys and it was nice to meet them and talk about the cars."

He said that during the French leg of the 3,500 mile trip, gendarmes were out in force every two miles slowing the cars down.

And in Germany the police stopped every driver, checked their papers and breath-tested them.

"The German officers were very, very friendly. They just wanted to check everybody was all right on their roads," said Mr Fensome.

He added the real highlight of the trip was going round the Nuremberg race circuit and nearing the finishing line in Rome.

Last week we revealed that the four bought their two cars especially for the event.

They also forked out more cash preparing the vehicles for the journey wiith the Porsche setting them back around £60,000 while just under £40,000 was spent on the Ferrari.

The drivers were flagged off from Earl's Court in London last Friday by model Nell McAndrew.

Mr Fensome added: "We did 600 miles a day which is certainly going some. But we would do it all over again if we could."

Four no-so-young men are set to jump into their souped-up cars and take part in a Cannonball run, just like in the film.

They are determined this drive of a lifetime, which started on Friday when model Nell McAndrew flagged them off from London's Earl's Court, will be a real hoot.

Driving a Ferrari Spider F355 is Rob Garofall, 33, of Weston Avenue, Leighton Buzzard, along with co-driver and next-door-neighbour 32-year-old Mark Foster.

Alongside him on the grid and driving a Porsche GT3 Mark II is 55-year-old semi-retired car dealer Dave Fensome of Comp Gate, Eaton Bray, and his co-driver is 39-year-old design consultant Kav Jarman of Luton's Sundon Park.

The foursome said they believed they were in for the trip of a lifetime before starting out on Friday's 3,500 mile trip.

It will take them six days and the lads along with hundreds of other racers will stay in five star hotels in each of the countries they are stopping over for one night.

Competitors taking part in Cannonball 8000 headed off from London to Brussels, Belgium. From there they drive to Munich, Germany then on to Italy's capital Rome before heading to Monaco on the French south coast before returning home.

Mr Garofall, a director of Free Spirit Car Sales in Billington Road, Leighton Buzzard, said: "It's a once in a lifetime thing. It's a chance to do a real bit of driving and have some fun at the same time."

Mr Foster added: "The aim is just enjoyment it's a once in a lifetime opportunity."

They said 100 cars are expected to take part in the run, the third of its type.

The men bought the cars especially for the journey and Mr Fensome said: "The motors have been specially prepared for the trip with no expense spared." The Porsche cost around £60,000 to prepare while the work to the Ferrari cost £38,000.

Mr Fensome added: "It's going to cost around £1,000 per car in petrol alone. But it's going to be well worth it."

The lads said they were looking forward to the nightly parties that will be held at the posh hotels they will stay in, including a black tie ball in Rome and a ball in London on their return.

Mr Garofall said: "I think the best bit is going to be getting to drive these cars on the German Autobahns where there are no speed limits."

The foursome plan to be back in the UK having carried out their hectic driving schedule by Wednesday.

The crash happened at 8.10pm on Friday, July 22, on the B489 Icknield Way, Eaton Bray, and involved a grey Honda Civic Type-R car, which left the road and collided with a tree.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, died at the scene.

Now police say that before the crash, the Honda, travelling towards Edlesborough, was following a metallic blue Subaru Impreza, which was being driven by a white man.

Police emphasise that there was no conflict between the vehicles. The Subaru driver has nothing to fear by coming forward, as he is being sought only as a witness.

The driver, or anyone else with information which could help, is urged to contact PC Tony Whinnett in the collision investigation unit on 01234 841212 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

The numbers of certain species of butterfly have fallen over the last two years including Grizled Skipper, Dingy Skipper, Green Hair Streak, Small Blue, The Wall Brown and Chalk Hill Blue.

Peter Glenister, butterfly recorder at Bedfordshire Natural History Society and Butterfly Conservation said: "Populations of butterfly have decreased over the years due to habitat management.

"Butterflies need suitable habitats and certain conditions to flourish.

"Grass has been overgrown at some sites and butterflies need short grass to get nectar to feed on."

Mr Glenister is retired and has been recording butterfly population growth for three years, he thinks better conservation management is needed.

He added: "We need better conservation management so we can be aware quite early of any changes in the butterfly populations.

"If we don't continue to do conservation work butterfly populations could rapidly decline.

"There has been a general decline of the butterfly population over the past 30 years. Some species have started to increase due to better habitat management and because people are more aware."

Mr Glenister collects data about butterflies from several areas in Luton and south Bedfordshire including The Chalk Hills, Whipsnade, Sundon Chalk Quarry, Sundon Hills, Stockgrove Park, Byson Hill and Dunstable Downs.

More than £10,000 was raised for local charities and good causes when St Mary's Village Carnival took place on Saturday. About ten floats with a nursery rhyme theme made up the procession through Eaton Bray and Edlesborough.

Edlesborough Under Fives group won the preschool and lower school category, while the 1st Eaton Bray and Edlesborough Cubs took first place in the junior school organisations with their Grand Old Duke of York float. In the fmily and business category, first place went to St Mary's Growing in Faith Together (GIFT), a faith group for yojng adults. The procession floats were accompanied by carnival queen Amy Ryder; princess Elizabeth Ranson and their attendants, who travelled in style with Honeywick Carriages. Along the route, Eaton Bray's best-dressed house was 128 High Street, while 64 High Street was named Edlesborough's winner.

A procession of vintage cars also travelled the route to Edlesborough Green, where the carnival was opened by businessman Peter Janes. Belly-dancing, worm-charming and chainsaw-carving were among the more unusual attractions.

Country dancing was performed by Dagnall School pupils, while displays of basket-weaving and spar-making, Birds of Bray and Clarabelle the Cow all helped make the day a success.

Visitors could also buy a plastic contestant to take part in the annual duck race on the River Ousel, which starts at the Meads in Eaton Bray on Saturday at 1pm. Carnival chairman Peter Bennett said: "The carnival's success was overshadowed by the recent sudden death of Brock Shaw, much loved by all, and whose role as press publicist and arena maestro will be very difficulr to fill."

The money raised will be split between St Mary's Church fabric fund, the Dagnall Church extension and other local charities and groups.

Only a fortnight after assuring customers that supplies were safe for the summer, Three Valleys Water has done an about turn and issued a 'save it' plea to punters.

We need to cut down immediately on any non-essential water use, especially when using sprinklers, hosepipes and garden pools, it warns.

Company bosses say that demand for water is now so high that they're having to work harder than ever to keep supplies flowing.

And the soaring demand means that during peak demand times - from 7am to 10am and from 4pm to 9pm - there may be low pressure problems in some areas.

During the recent heatwave the firm pumped more than a billion litres of water over one weekend - 25 per cent up on the average demand.

Managing director Peter Darby said: "Our main concern is the extreme strain on the water supply network caused by surges of demand when people turn on hosepipes and psrinklers to water their gardens at peak times.

"The soaring temperatures resulted in a huge demand for water, much of which is simply wasted outdoors."

He warned that sprinklers and most garden pools should only be used when a water meter is fitted, and company sleuths are using state of the art equipment to track down anyone flouting those rules.

Anyone using a sprinkler without a meter can face a £1,000 fine, and although that doesn't apply to hosepipes, users are urged to be 'socially and environmentally responsible' by avoinding wastage and unnecessary use.

This year saw an expansion in the programme with evening entertainment and even a magician, who with a little more "abracadabra" could have produced some more ale when the taps ran dry.

Two thousand pounds was raised towards the hall development costs and a great deal of thanks is owed not only to the CAMRA organizers, but also the small army of volunteers, who helped produce such a wonderful weekend. The Chair of the fund raising committee, Katrina Videtta, was obviously in the mood to celebrate as she prepared for her forthcoming wedding. We wish her and future husband Paul Hurley every happiness, and may their fund raising continue lnog into the future.

Welcomers will be waiting to show visitors around the churches which take part. There are two trails from which to choose - or you could take a closer look at the church on your own doorstep.

One trail includes St Mary's Catholic Church, in West Street, Dunstable; St Mary's Church, Eaton Bray; and St Giles Church, Totternhoe.

And the second includes St Mary's Church, Harlington; All Saints Church, Chalgrave; St George's Church, Toddington; St Mary's Church, Sundon; and St Nicholas Church, Barton. Churches in Tilsworth, Stanbridge, Leighton Buzzard and Linslade will also be open.

Leaflets can be picked up from the South Beds District Council HQ, in Dunstable, from libraries and at the churches. Or download a leaflet from www.southbeds.gov.uk.

There will be something for everyone, including a colourful carnival procession, worm-charming and displays of belly dancing, kite-flying and basket-making.

This year's carnival will be on the theme of nursery rhymes. As always, there will be a contest to find the best-dressed homes on the carnival theme in Eaton Bray and Edlesborough.

Carnival Queen Amy Ryder, Carnival Princess Elizabeth Ranson and their attendants, Heather Potton and Grace Shrowder, will lead the carnival procession.

It leaves The Orchards, Eaton Bray, at 12:30pm and arrives at Edlesborough Green at 1:30pm.

The carnival begins with the judging of the Companion Dog Show, at noon.

The belly dancing with Shi'mya and her Utopia dance troupe is a new event. They will dance with veils, finger cymbals, stick and sword to a variety of music styles. And the kite-flying by Gary Tyrell and his team is another new feature. The team, which includes a UK Quad Novice Champion, will be flying American "quad kites", which have four control lines.

A chainsaw woodcarving demonstration will be held, with a raffle to win artist Dan Cordell's finished sculpture.

Other attractions include an exhibition by the Birds of Bray, and a vintage and classic car, bike and tractor display.

Clarabelle the pantomime cow will be at the carnival, too, for the annual contest to guess where she will drop her "message".

And there will be a number of stalls, a prize draw and lots of other fun. This year's carnival proceeds will be shared between the St Mary's Church fabric fund, the Dagnall Church extension and other local charities and good causes.

There is no charge for admission to the carnival, and plenty of free parking is at hand.

To find out more, check out the www.stmarysvillagecarnival.com website.

You can also pick out a plastic duck at the carnival for the duck race to be held down the River Ouzel on the following Saturday, July 9th. Tickets are £1 per duck.

Puzzle master Gordon Gray didn't have a clue about the special award lined up for him by Rotarians.

So he really was suprised to be given a prestigious Good Citizen Award by the Rotary Club of Dunstable Downs.

That special award was presented to him here by club president John Dent, at a dinner in honour of the charity fundraiser.

Mr Gray, aged 53, said: "It was a total suprise." He has been raising charity cash from his annual Christmas word puzzle for 14 years.

Puzzle fans who take part make donations to a kitty for worthy causes.

Over the years, the puzzle has raised £18,065 in charity cash. The 2004 Christmas puzzle alone raised £3,010, which gave a £300 boost each to WorkAid, Skillshare and Friends of the Animals, and £2,110 to St Luke's Hospice, Harrow and Brent.

That puzzle attracted entried from Cyprus and France.

Mr Gray, of Northall is a Dunstable Grammar School "old boy" and formerly lived in Dunstable and Houghton Regis. The former Manshead School teacher is a familiar figure in the Eaton Bray and Edlesborough area, through his community work.

He joined the St Mary's Village Carnival committee back in 1989 and took on the busy rold of chairman for five years up to 2003.

This year, he is organising the procession for the carnival, which will take place on July 2 on Edlesborough Green.

Mr Gray is also a reader at St Mary's Church, Eaton Bray, and actively supports young people, including the GIFT (Growing In Faith Together) group.

The next Christmas Puzzle will be on a theme based on a poem and is expected to be available from December 8 from the website www.christmaspuzzle.co.uk.

The taps won't be runing dry in the Luton and Dunstable area this summer.

Despite fears of a national water shortage and looming hosepipe bans because of a continuing drought, the firm running the local water supply is confident that theu'll be able to keep supplies flowing.

Following one of the driest winters in 100 years, Southern Water have already had to introduce hose pip bans in the noth of Sussex, the first bans in nine years.

People living in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are also facing hosepipe bans after only 58 per cent of their average rainfall was recorded in the last seven months.

The team at Three Valleys Water, which serves South Beds, is keeping a close eye on the situation but don't reckon emergency measures will be needed here.

A spokesman said: "The low rainfall has resulted in a continuing decline of groundwater levels and these are below average for the time of year. Even heavy rainfall will not improve groundwater levels"

But because groundwater levels usually hold up well in the first year of any drought - and that's where we are at the moment - short-term supplies are safe.

The spokesman added: "We do not anticipate any water supply problems during the summer of 2005. We remain heedful of the situation and would encourage customers to use water wisely over the coming months, both in light of the current situation and in case we have another dry winter next year."

Three Valleys Water is spending £5 million over the next five years to study the impact of dry weather on rivers, working in partnership with the Environment Agency and local environmental groups.

This is the third year running that our collection total has increased; due to your generosity but also to more people completing the Gift Aid form on the envelope which this year amounted to £1,418.

It is always difficult to thank all the people who have helped us, but we would like to record a special thank you to Les Bradbury, who has been a collector for 18 years and is now "resting" - well done Les!

Many thanks also to our friends at 'Churches Together' for organising the coffee morning and Christian Aid service.

This year's collection is especially important as 2005 is "Make Poverty History Year" and you have responded with a 15% increase over last year's collection, a wonderful contribution. The important fact to remember is that Christian Aid works through partner organizations in developing countries and so gives support directly to people in need - rest assured you all made a difference to our planet.

Lita Litchfield, of Edlesborough, was taking her horse Maddie for a ride in a field near Honeywick Lane, Eaton Bray when it collapsed.

The 26-year-old mare, which has arthritis in her back legs, could not get back up and Mrs Litchfield feared she would panic and possibly suffer a heart attack.

She said: "She landed with a thud and just couldn't lift herself back up again, because of the shock of her fall and the arthritis she has in her back legs I just panicked. We knew that if we didn't get Maddie back up soon, she might have to be put down.

"So I dialled 999 for the fire brigade and when they arrived they slipped a strap underneath her to help lift her up. Eventually we all managed to pull her up so she could stand up for herself.

"I'm so glad Maddie's still alive. My father, who died last March, gave her to me 14 years ago, so she obviously means the absolute world to me. The firefighters, green watch from Dunstable Fire Station, were amazing.

"Even after we'd managed to lift Maddie up, six of them helped me walk her back to the field where we keep her - a good mile away - as a precaution, just in case she fell over again.

"I'm so grateful to the firefighters - they saved her life, I'm sure of it."

The Campaign for Real Ale festival will see live music on Friday and Saturday evening, as well as beer and cider chosen especially for the event.

Lager and wine will also be on sale, as well as soft drinks and hot and cold food.

Friday will see guitarist Paul Green, who has performed with Suzi Quatro, playing at 8pm, while the Shambles big band will get the festival swinging on Saturday at 8pm.

Magician David Andrews will keep all the family entertained on Saturday from 2pm.

Last year's festival raised £2,000 towards the village hall refurbishment and it is hoped to repeat the success this year.

The festival will run on Friday from 6pm to 11pm, Saturday from noon to 11pm and Sunday from noon to 3pm at Eaton Bray Village Hall in Church Lane.

Admission on Friday and Saturday is by raffle ticket, which costs £2 per adult in advance or £3 on the day. Children go free and there is no admission charge for Sunday.

Clarabelle the Cow is back! Is there anyone out there who doesn't know about Clarabelle? For heavens sake please tell them! She will be selecting a winner on the 2nd of July on Edlesborough Green at the end of the big day and that leaves you plenty of time to invest in the "real estate", a piece of most desirable property - to be precise, a square of your choice ready for Clarabelle's visitation. Before the day, there will be Friends of Clarabelle out collecting around the villages and you can get a head start of marking out your territory for the big day. If you are missed out in the two or three weeks leading up to the Carnival, you will still have a chance on the Green.

Another returning event is the Duck Race. The contestant ducks can be chosen at the Carnival but the actual race (down the mighty Ousel) will take place the next Saturday. So, have a little flutter on a duck! But don't forget the Worm Charming! Can we have a Carnival without it?

Looking at Paula's beaming smile, it's hard to believe that doctors had feared that her leg might have to be amputated. And it was a special moment when she and her 17-hand showjumper, Dennis, won a dressage championship in Eaton Bray.

Paula, who is an auditor with Leighton Buzzard accountants Everett Collins & Loosley, said: "I was over the moon, I couldn't believe it, because of what we had been through together."

On top of Paula's injury, her horse has also had leg problems in recent years. "To come through and win the championship…I never thought I'd do that with him, I really didn't," she said.

These have been funded separately and in total approximately £7,000 has been spent on the new stage facilities. These included new overhead dimmable stage lighting, two Front of House sage spotlights and a pre-wired Front of House lighting bar (to be installed shortly).

New black rear stage curtains, side drapes and overhead borders.

We have also installed a first class sound system, which has inputs for CD players, Keyboards and a permanently installed radio microphone.

These facilities are all easy to use and can be made available to all hall users. They have greatly improved stage effictiveness and appearance for functions and dances.

Our thanks to the following for their donations to make this possible:
- Edlesbray Players
- The Villagers
- Front Row
- St Mary's Church

Please help us this year, as again our collection is needed more than ever. This year is important, as it is the year of speaking up for trade justice. Let's make 2005 a real "Make Poverty History" year - this is the first time that all the major charities, Christian Aid, Cafod, Oxfam, Tearfund and others, have all combined to confront world governments on Fair Trade with the developing world. Finally, Heather Potton, 9, and Grace Shrowder, 8, became their Attendants. Although time was tight for the selection this year, the event nevertheless went off well. The Leighton Buzzard Observer, who sent a photographer, and the Dunstable Gazette both were anxious for the names of the winners as early the next day as they could.

So, on Carnival Day, the 2nd of July, these four young dignitaries will lead the Carnival Procession from The Orchards in Eaton Bray to Edlesborough Green in a horse-drawn carriage from Honeywick Carriages of Eaton Bray. They will be dressed in gowns from Confetti Bridalwear of Tring and their hair will be styled by Chick’s Crop Shop of Dunstable. The flowers will come from Edlesborough’s Village Flower Shop. They will add a note of elegance to the procession.

The count is at 3! We have only three months till THE DAY and it will be with us before we know it.

It is easy to assume that the Carnival has been a feature of village life forever. However, while a fete, fair or even fayre was probably held in the villages going back into antiquity, its modern form is not so old as we may think. One of the pioneers of the Carnival as it is today is Mel Grundy and he has provided us with a personal insight into the history as he remembers it.

Mel's personal insight, can be found here on the St Mary's Village Carnival website.

The 2004 Puzzle raised £3,010 - as a result I was able to donate £300 to each of WorkAid, Skillshare and Friends of the Animals and £2,110 to St Luke's Hospice, Harrow & Brent. For the first time the puzzle went 'international' with entries from Cyprus and from France. Of the 234 entries received 39 submitted a perfect solution scoring 120 marks, including Viv and Mel Grundy and Liz Constable from our villages.

A draw to identify prize winners was held on 30 January in St Mary's Church, Eaton Bray. Four winners were selected at random - each receives a cheque for £20. They were: Alex Cornock from Butlers Cross near Aylesbury, Margaret Cotterill from Littleover in Derbyshire, Helen Cullum from Alton in Hants and Robert Norman from Luton.

The other prize winner selected at random from all entries recieved was Mrs Chris Burrows from the Wirral, who scored 119½. She, too, recieves a cheque for £20.

This year's donations bring the total money raised by the Puzzle to £18,065. Thanks to everyone who has supported the activity over the years. Next year's puzzle, with a theme based on a poem, is already set and ready for distribution. I expect to put it in the post on 8 December from whic dat it will be possible to download the puzzle from the website: www.christmaspuzzle.co.uk
Gordon Gray

As this was my final Panto, I was pleased that people did seem to enjoy themselves. After 13 years I have put away my Panto. pen, folded up the directors chair and hung up the vacancy notice – any takers?

I am still involved with the Edlesbray Players doing other things and do so hope that we will find someone to take the Panto side of things on – it would be a shame for it to fold up as it does bring different elements of the villages together.

Thank you to all of you who have supported the project over the years, whether cast, helpers or audience – without your support we would not have been able to help Eaton Bray Village Hall with the refurbishment. We wish the Management Team good luck with their efforts on the next phase.

The 2004 event raised over £10,000 and this has been disbursed to a variety of local worthy causes. Everyone who contributed in any way has every reason to be pleased with their efforts and you may find it interesting to see the complete list of charitable contributions (along with some candid photos) on the Carnival website

The St Mary’s Village Carnival 2005 will be held on the 2nd of July on Edlesborough Green and preparation has begun for another successful event.

The theme in 2005 is "Nursery Rhymes", which once more gives a wide range of choices for anyone who wants to get into the spirit of the day. As anyone who has participated in the past knows, we are all encouraged to come in costumes. So, come all Little Miss Muffets, all Georgie Porgies (No kissing!), Bo Peeps, Jack Horners, Humpty Dumpties - or even the Wheels on the Bus if you wish.

We will be following the pattern of the Carnival which has been so successful in the past and the major charitable recipient will be the Dagnall Church Extension. However, as always, we will also be sharing the receipts among the many local groups that go to enrich the life of the villages.

It was listed in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Eitone. The suffix 'Bray' refers to the family that once owned the manor in this village.

Eaton Bray once had a moated castle. The moat, today all that remains, is open to the public for fishing at 'Park Farm'. In Victorian times Arthur Macnamara (the 'Mad Squire' of Billington) planned to build a mansion on the site of the castle, but ran out of money after completing the lodge at the entrance to Park Farm.

One of the more distinctive Victorian buildings near the church, is the 'Coffee Tavern' built by a tea-total vicar of the parish to encourage the villagers out of the local public houses.

Nationally, he highlighted 393 schools and colleges which had received an outstanding report in 2003-04 and provide a high standard of education for their pupils.

The Ofsted chief said: "I heartily congratulate the headteacher, staff, governors and pupils or students of all the successful schools and colleges named in my annual report on their success and hard work in delivering such a high standard of education."

Eaton Bray Lower's head, Sue Hounslow, said: "We have a great team – teachers, non-teaching staff, governors, parents, Home School Association and not forgetting the children!

Members of the cast are pictured.

The Edlesbray Players are treading the boards for their 12th annual pantomime, written and produced as usual by Valerie Trantum.

Performances are on Thursday to Saturday, January 20-22, at 7.30pm. In addition there are matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23, at 2pm.

After the pantomime, the company will embark on preparations for their next production, a review celebrating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two, on May 7.

The players were established in 1993 and put on their first panto Cinderella the following January.

Originally called St Mary's Panto Group, it changed its name in 1995, when the players put on a review to mark the 50th anniversary of VE Day.

The group incorporates a strong Young Players section which this year outnumbers the older actors.
